Library Cards & Borrowing Information


Holds / Reserves

Residents and property holders may place holds on all library materials at no charge. Reserves may be placed by phone, in person, or by accessing the catalog from the Library's Web site. When materials are available, notification will be provided by phone or by email. Items will be held for 5 days.

Library Cards

The Library will issue a card at no charge to anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Farmington or Farmington Hills, or owns property in either of the two cities.   You may apply online for a Library Card by filling out the online form, and then coming to either Branch of the Library, bringing acceptable proof of eligibility—acceptable proof of eligibility includes a valid driver's license with current address, a tax receipt, voter registration card, property deed, or a utility bill with your name and address. Applications for minors under 18 years of age require the signature of a parent or legal guardian. Patrons who have family/friends visiting may apply for a Courtesy Card for them at the Circulation Desk. Reciprocal borrowing privileges are extended to residents in any community whose library is a member of The Library Network, our Cooperative. The Library also participates in Michicard, the statewide library card program. See our flyer describing this program and the list of over 500 participating libraries.

With your Library Card you can:

  • Reserve or renew materials 24 hours a day
  • Use the self check-out stations at either Branch
  • Request materials from other libraries
  • Use our public computers
  • Browse our online subscription research resources

Loan Periods

  • Most Adult, Young Adult, and Children's books, Music CDs, Books on CD / Playaways / MP3s: 21 days

  • New Books, all Magazines: 14 days

  • "Lucky Day" books are limited to 2 titles, which circulate for 2 weeks, and are non-renewable, nor can holds be placed on them.

  • CD-Roms, Video Games, all DVDs and Videos: 7 days; Adult Feature DVDs are limited to 10 titles; Multi-disc Adult Feature DVDs will have an initial loan period of two weeks but the renewal period will be for five days.

  • "Lucky Day" DVDs: 2 titles for 2 days—these are not renewable, nor can holds be placed on them.

  • Extended Loan Periods: A vacation loan is available for an extended period on some materials. Circulation staff will provide more information.

How Do I Manage My Library Account?

You can login via our Web Site to your Library Account and review items out or on hold.

Overdue Fees & Replacement Costs

Fines accrue at twenty-five cents per day, per item until they reach the maximum limit show below. After 180 days, items are considered lost and the replacement cost is applied to the patron's record. Once a lost item is paid for, it becomes the property of the patron and no refunds will be given. Once a fine threshold of $15.00 is reached, a patron's ability to check out further materials may be blocked until the issue is resolved. You may email our Circulation Department or you may call the Head of Circulation Services at the appropriate Branch to effect a resolution—the numbers given below are only for negotiating overdues. Maximum Overdue fee per item:

  • Adult, Young Adult and Children's Audio/Visual Materials: $6.00
  • Adult and Young Adult Books: $6.00
  • Adult and Young Adult Fiction Paperbacks: $3.00
  • Adult and Young Adult Magazines: $3.00
  • Bi-Fokal and Smart Start Kits: $6.00
  • Children's Books: $2.00
  • Children's Fiction Paperbacks: $2.00
  • Children's Magazines: $2.00

Renewals

  • All library materials, except those in the Lucky Day Collection, may be renewed. If a hold is pending on that title, renewal may be blocked.

  • Most items may be renewed up to five times unless there is a reserve on the item.

  • New Books and DVDs have only one renewal. Staff may renew items for patrons who come in or call the library, or patrons may renew items themselves by accessing the library catalog in the building or remotely through the library's website. Renewal loan periods are 3 weeks for most books, 2 weeks for New Books and audiovisual items and 1 week for most DVDs and Videos; the renewal period for Adult Feature DVDs is seven (7) days.

  • Renewals are available via the web or you can come into either Branch of the Library and renew in person, or by phone (248) 553-0300 during Library hours.

Returning Items

All library materials may be returned within our buildings during our normal operating hours, or by using the book return chutes, 24 hours a day.

Book return chutes are located at:

  • Main Library: on the east side of the building )Post Office side) near the delivery entrance.

  • Farmington Branch : A book return box is located on the drive leading to Liberty St. between the Library and City Hall. A book chute is located on the east side of the building near the parking lot entrance but it is locked during open hours..

Print materials owned by the Farmington Community Library may also be returned to any library which is a member of our Cooperative, The Library Network.

What Types of Materials Can I Check Out?

The Farmington Community Library offers more than 270,000 Books for adults, teens, and children, with an additional 8,400+ eBooks. Nearly 30,000 Films are available in DVD and Video formats, plus 21,000 items in Audio formats (Music and Books on CD and Cassette), as well as downloadable AudioBooks, MP3s, and PlayAways. We subscribe to over 600 magazines and newspapers.
